fire damper TESTING

How Often Should You Test Fire Dampers

In the UK, the testing and maintenance is governed by BS 9999:22017 and BS 7346-8:2013

It is a legal requirement to test and inspect your fire dampers, at least annually

BS 9999:2017 legislation states that:

“all fire dampers to be tested by a competent person on completion of the installation and at annual intervals. Spring-operated fire dampers should be tested annually, and fire dampers situated in dust-laden and similar atmospheres should be tested much more frequently, at periods suited to the degree of pollution.”

Buildings such as hospitals, schools and manufacturing facilities are high-risk environments. In these instances, maintenance should be carried out on a more regular basis.

Fire Dampers

Fire dampers play a crucial role in the fire protection of a building, as they are designed to close in the event of a fire, helping to prevent the spread of smoke and flames through the ductwork.

A Fire Damper inspection is an essential part of a comprehensive fire safety plan and as fire dampers are part of a building life safety system, they need to be maintained in accordance with current British standard legislation and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

Our experienced engineers have the knowledge and expertise to thoroughly evaluate your mechanical or motorised damper system, ensuring that it’s functioning correctly and providing the necessary protection in the event of a fire.

During a mechanical damper inspection, our engineers will perform a number of tasks, including:

  • Visual inspection of dampers for signs of damage or wear

  • Testing of damper operation, including opening and closing, to ensure proper function

  • Inspection of damper linkage and hinges for looseness or wear

  • Inspection of damper actuators for proper operation

  • Inspection of control systems and associated components, such as dampers, actuators, and control valves, to ensure they are functioning correctly

  • Verification of damper fire protection function

  • Assessment of damper accessibility for maintenance and repair

  • Recommendations for damper maintenance and repairs as necessary

We carry out full site surveys for your fire damper testing and maintenance requirements, all carried out in full accordance with current fire damper legislation and provide you with a comprehensive report detailing any remedial works and an appropriate quotation for the carrying out of any remedial works required.

All our inspection surveys are carried out by our our competent and qualified engineers.
